Is it true that projector lamps have been banned?

A short answer: In the distant future, something like this could happen.

There are now a number of reports about the ban on projector lamps, which are often not entirely true.
We would therefore like to clarify the situation here.

This is about the EU Mercury Regulations (EU) 2017/852 and the RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU.

From February 25, 2025 projector lamps with less than 2000 lumens should be banned
(this concerns only a few projector lamps, mostly very old models).

The European Federation of Lighting Manufacturers, which includes major manufacturers such as Philips and Osram, has applied to the EU for a five-year extension.

This application alone has postponed the deadline by 12 to 18 months.
As far as we know, no decision has yet been taken on the application, and according to the decision, whether it be a rejection or an approval, a transitional period of 12 - 18 months applies, so February 25, 2025 is therefore no longer valid. A ban could come into force here in 2026 at the earliest, if at all. Please note that this only applies to lamps under 2000 lumens.

From February 25, 2027, projector lamps with more than 2000 lumens will be banned.

There is currently no application for an extension of the deadline for this date, but it is expected that the European Federation of the Lighting Industry will also apply for a five-year extension in 2025.

Therefore, the fact is:
No one needs to worry about there being no lamps soon before 2026. But even after that, we do not currently expect a ban to come into effect in the next few years.

As soon as the situation becomes more serious in the distant future, we will inform our customers in good time.

It should also be noted that this is an import ban on the lamps and not a ban on sales. Should there be an import ban in the distant future, we, our suppliers and also our manufacturers would stockpile.
